What is Mobile Device Management and should my business have it?

Mobile device management (MDM) is a type of software which enables policies to be enforced on smartphones, tablets and other endpoints.

In small and medium sized businesses, one of the most common uses of MDM is to protect the business when staff have access to company data and email on their personally-owned devices. The last thing you need is for a disgruntled ex-employee to still have access to your files or messaging systems after they have left!

Ideally, the business will have a written policy for “Bring Your Own Devices” and this will include a requirement that if an employee is going to access company information on their mobile device, then the company will first need to install MDM software.

Once installed, that software can remotely wipe data from the device if required – for example if the device is lost or stolen, or if the employee leaves your organisation. Most importantly, it removes historic information, including previous email which might otherwise still exist on the device if, all you did was close down the user’s email account.

It is important to select an appropriate type of MDM software which has the ability to segregate company data from the user’s personal data, photos, messages etc, so that if a data wipe is required, only company information is removed. Talk to us to find out more, or enter your contact details here.
