As from October this year, Microsoft will stop supporting the server Operating System known as “Windows Server 2012 R2”.
The platform is 10 years old this year and no further updates – including security fixes – will be rolled out after October, leaving potential vulnerabilities for those still using it.
What should you do if you’re still relying on this Operating System?
- Consider whether your business still needs a server. Review what that server is doing for you, and whether there are now Cloud alternatives for the applications that are running on the server.
- If a server is still necessary, then replacement needs to be arranged. Simply installing updated software on the existing server isn’t really an option because any hardware that currently runs on Server 2012 R2 will be of an age where it needs replacing.
- Don’t delay! If you’re moving into the Cloud, the transition may take a little time to plan and to put in place. If you’re replacing your server, there may be a lead-in time to actually obtain the new device and then to get it configured and installed.
