Microsoft has announced that it will shortly be releasing an update to its internet browser, Edge. The updated browser will have a built in ‘Bing’ search engine button, powered by an upgraded version of the same technology that underpins Chat GPT.
Chat GPT is the Artificial Intelligence (AI) ‘ChatBot’ that has been trained to learn what humans mean when they ask a question. It has been taking the world by storm over recent months because of its ability to answer complex questions in the style of a human conversation.
Microsoft promises that this combination will provide a new experience for browsing the web and finding information online. Edge will enable you to ask Bing directly from the browser to provide more context to what you are looking at.
During some recent demonstrations of the new technology, Microsoft showed a number of example Bing searches which included:
- Querying Bing for recipes
- Asking for shopping ideas
- Instructing it to ‘create an itinerary for each day of a 5-day trip to Mexico City’. The question was answered entirely by the chatbot, which described a rough itinerary alongside links to sources for more information.
The launch also includes two new AI-enhanced features for Edge:
- Chat, which will allow users to summarise the webpage or document they’re looking at and ask questions about its contents.
- Compose, which will act as a writing assistant, helping to generate text for documents, emails or social media posts, based on a few starting prompts.
Revolutionary technology indeed – we await the launch with interest!
