Choosing the right IT support provider for your business

If you are looking for a technology company to outsource your IT support to, you’ll want an organisation that will:

  • provide advice on the right technology solutions for your needs
  • provide prompt service when something needs rectifying
  • advise on and implement security measures for your systems and your data
  • help you ensure that the people in your business use your technology in the right way and don’t put your business at risk

When it comes to IT support companies, there are numerous providers. There are no regulatory requirements or specific certifications that need to be achieved in order to set up in technology support. It is easy to assume that an IT person is an expert just because they know a bit more than you do, on the subject.

How do you know you have found a provider you can depend on?

As with many services, a recommendation is a great starting point, but whether an IT support company has been recommended to you or not, here are some aspects to consider:

  1. How long they have been established.
  2. External certifications. The achievement of Cyber Essentials and ISO27001 demonstrates that the company takes security seriously and will extend that ethos to its customers’ cyber security.
  3. Industry partnerships. Look at the range of suppliers that the provider is teamed up with, especially global names such as Microsoft.
  4. How many engineers they have. It is best not to be reliant on one or two people.
  5. Do they keep abreast of industry developments and gain relevant qualifications?
  6. Does their support contract include Service Level Agreements, setting out timeframes for dealing with customer issues?
  7. Talk to them. Do they give you confidence that they will understand your business and will tailor your technology solutions to help you meet your goals?
  8. Look at their website for customer reviews / testimonials. Ask for a couple of reference sites – existing customers who would be happy to speak to you.
