Apple rumoured to be launching new low-cost devices

Press reports in the US indicate that Apple is planning to hold a virtual launch event on the 8th March. It is expected that, at the event, Apple will announce a new low-cost iPhone and iPad. Rumours are that:

  • The new iPhone will be a 5G version of the iPhone SE, which was introduced in the spring of 2020. As well as having 5G capability, the new device is likely to have a faster processor.
  • The new iPad will be an updated version of the iPad Air – that device last having been updated in October 2020.
  • The launch may also include a new version of the Mac.

Generally, Apple’s low-cost device launches are more low-key than the traditional Autumn launches, when new models of the higher-end devices are brought to market. However, it is thought that the March launch will be timed to coincide with the official release of iOS 15.4 – the latest version of the iPhone software.

iOS 15.4 is currently being trialled and is expected to include several new features, including the ability to use facial recognition to unlock the device while wearing a mask.
