Another layer of security with Microsoft Defender

IT security within your business remains of paramount importance. Fraudsters are constantly looking for ways to extort money or information and if anything, have become even more active during the pandemic.

The best security systems involve a combination of measures. They include anti-virus software, multi-factor authentication and staff training.

Malware or fraudulent activity often starts with an employee opening an attachment to an email, or clicking on a link in an email. You can help protect your organisation, with another layer of security – Microsoft Defender.

Microsoft Defender is a cloud-based email filtering service. It scans the content of emails before they arrive in the in-box, to identify anything that may be malicious. If the scan determines that the email is harmless, it is allowed through to the user’s mailbox. If not:

  • If there is an unsafe attachment, it is removed from the email and the recipient is notified that this has happened
  • If there is an unsafe link within the email, this is replaced by a message saying that it was a bad link and the recipient is prevented from clicking on it.

It isn’t only your email that is safeguarded in this way. The protection extends to other applications within the Microsoft 365 world – namely Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive – by preventing access to files that contain malware.

One of the best features of Microsoft Defender is what’s known as “zero day protection”. This means that it doesn’t just find threats that have already been identified and recorded; it finds new threats which may have previously been undiscovered.

There is a robust reporting system which notifies your organisation’s Administrator of activity, and a portal with detailed statistics.

Microsoft Defender is applied to your mailboxes via a low-cost monthly licence. To find out more, please give us a call or enter your contact details here.
