How are you looking after your passwords?

The National Crime Agency has reported that fraud is now the most commonly experienced crime in the UK, affecting UK society economically and socially. It accounts for over 40% of crime in England and Wales. With online crime a major part of this, no-one can afford to be complacent when it comes to cyber security.

Passwords are a key factor and it is surprising how many individuals still compromise their online security by using weak or easily guessable passwords, such as pet names or important dates.

So, how can you tighten up security whilst still maintaining easy access to the applications that you need?

  • Create strong passwords. A random mix of words is a good start, and incorporating numbers and symbols makes the password even stronger. Each application that you use should have its own unique password.
  • Add enhanced protection. Activate multi-factor authentication for an additional security layer, especially for applications handling sensitive data or financial transactions.
  • Use password management software. Don’t write passwords down or store them somewhere that is not encrypted. There are some excellent password management applications which will store them securely and enable you to copy and paste directly into the login screens, to make the process easier. You can also use the password management software to generate strong passwords for you, rather than you having to think of them!
