Google has recently launched its latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, named Gemini.
With all the publicity around Open AI’s “ChatGPT” over the last couple of years, the big question is whether Gemini is as good as – or better than – ChatGPT.
Google’s claim is that Gemini can beat ChatGPT, which is, of course the angle it is using to sell the new solution. But is this a valid claim, or just hype?
Unsurprisingly, there has been no shortage of people keen to trial Gemini and assess it against Chat GPT. Here are some of their findings:
Answering questions. Both Chat GPT and Gemini can respond to questions in an informative and comprehensive way – even if the questions are open / challenging.
Translating between languages. Both models can translate between languages with high accuracy.
Generating text. Both are considered excellent at generating realistic and creative text formats, including articles, poems, essays and even pieces of music.
Computer coding. Both can generate a variety of types of code, making them useful for software developers and programmers.
Reasoning and mathematical tasks. Gemini is considered to be slightly superior in this area, based on benchmark tests carried out. This may be due to its link with Google search results.
Factual accuracy. Gemini is also considered superior in this area. Whilst the overall level of accuracy of Chat GPT is pretty high, it is more likely to generate factual errors. Again, Gemini’s access to Google search results gives it the edge here.
Availability. Currently, Chat GPT is more readily available and is fast and reliable.
Community. Chat GPT has a much larger user community and there is extensive documentation available. At the moment, this isn’t the case with Gemini.
So which one should I use?
Both Chat GPT and Google Gemini are powerful tools with a wide range of potential applications.
Choosing the right model for your needs depends on your particular priorities. If you need a readily available and fast application to create text, Chat GPT might be a good choice.
However, if you require a model with superior reasoning and better mathematical abilities, then Google Gemini might be the better option.
