There has been a rapid fall in recent years, in the number of businesses still relying on on-premise servers to handle their data and communications. Cloud solutions have so many advantages, including ease of access, security, reliability and no need for costly hardware.
With Cloud services, such as Microsoft 365, there is no worry about losing information due to a server breakdown, server damage, or disk failure.
As long as it isn’t deleted, data held in the Cloud will remain there permanently, in a secure environment. It may be natural, therefore, to assume that this means the end of needing to back up your data.
But what about the human action?
It is estimated that almost one in three users have, at some point, experienced data loss due to situations such as:
- The inadvertent deletion of documents or e-mails, in error.
- The overwriting of a file or document.
- The intentional deletion of data which is considered obsolete – only to find that it is needed again at some future time.
- A disgruntled employee deliberately deleting items before leaving an organisation.
- A user clicking on an unsafe link or attachment in an e-mail, providing access to a hacker, who could then delete or corrupt data.
In some situations it may be possible to retrieve a deleted item, especially if the deletion has happened within the last 90 days. However, that is not always possible and certainly if the event was longer ago than that, then recovery is not an option.
The good news, however, is that you can protect your business against such risks, with a service that takes a snapshot of your Microsoft 365 environment and backs it up to an additional cloud service. Your files, mail, calendars and contacts are backed up at intervals during each day and the highest levels of security are applied, with data being encrypted at rest and in transit.
In the event of something being deleted, you simply go to the last backup before the deletion and recover the lost items. You can either recover your whole database, or just specific items. Robust search filters make it easy to locate the files and folder you need, quickly.
