If you’re starting to notice that your iPhone is not as responsive as it once was, here are some basic “housekeeping” steps that you can take, aimed at speeding things up again
Give the phone a restart.
It might sound basic, but so many people don’t actually switch off the device for long periods at a time, and this is a quick and easy way to give the device a refresh. It can clear temporary files, switch off apps that may not have closed properly, and free up some memory.
Review your photo and video library.
Delete anything that you no longer need – get rid of duplicates, or any poor quality images that you’re never going to use. Consider using cloud storage services for the items you want to keep, so that you can free up your phone’s storage space.
Remove any Podcasts that you no longer need.
They can take up more storage space than you realise!
How many apps do you actually use?
Identify apps you haven’t touched in months and delete them. This frees up phone storage space. It can also reduce background activity and improve battery life. If you’re using iOS 11 or later, there is a handy “Offload App” feature which allows the app to be removed, but the data from it to be retained. This means that if you need to load the app again in the future, previous data will still be there.
Don’t let the phone get too hot or too cold.
Your phone’s operating system is designed to adjust the performance of the device if it has become too hot. External conditions such as a hot car or extended use in sunlight can affect performance. Move the device to a cooler location and let its temperature adjust. Very cold temperatures can also slow your device temporarily, but moving it to a warmer location should fix things.
Check the battery health.
(Go to Settings / Battery / Battery Health.) All rechargeable batteries are consumable components that become less effective as they chemically age. Over time, iPhone batteries can diminish in their capacity and performance and may need to be replaced.
